Vaughn Dickie – resident of Central Onslow, NS has been in attendance and volunteering at every Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition for over 70 years and since its beginnings as a small county fair back in 1946. In the beginning as a very young boy it was Vaughn’s responsibility to spend the night with his brother and friend in the food tent to keep an eye on things so nothing went missing. At that time the Onslow Ladies group looked after all the home cooking served in the tent. Late one night on the first year of their guard duty services, the boys – Vaughn included, decided they were hungry and helped themselves to one of the home-made blueberry pies. The next morning when one of the ladies realized a pie was gone, those boys paid dearly by having to eat anything and everything Mrs. More put in front of them.
At 82 years young, Vaughn is an icon around the grounds of the NSPE. Whether he is organizing the dairy show, planning the lay-out of the livestock displays in the Agridome or taking a much deserved nap in his golf cart, is never far and definitely one of those go-to kind of guys who can help answer any question or concern that arises.
Vaughn’s volunteerism doesn’t end with the NSPE. He is one of the original/founding members of the Onslow-Belmont Fire Brigade. Vaughn attends regular meetings at the fire hall and assists with fundraising for the brigade.
